Russian State Library Expands Funds Digitizing Program in 2015
In 2015 Russian State Library extends funds digitizing program, the purpose of which is to facilitate access to academic and educational literature. The list of titles planned to be digitized in January 2015 covers more than 1000 books across a wide range of subjects, published from 1917 till 2004 (textbooks, dictionaries, reference books, monographs, encyclopedias, albums, atlases, guidebooks).
Technologies are advancing rapidly, and almost all specialized literature becomes obsolete within the period of ten years. RSL tried to add to the list only the books that have not lost their value over the years.
These publications are included in the collections "Russian language", "Literature", "History of Russia", "Nations of Russia", "Art", "Religion", "Philosophy". The collection “Geography” covers a selection of local literature, including regional encyclopedias.
RSL has been digitizing funds before this current program, but only the old ones, as it was stipulated in the copyright law in Russia.
In February 2014 there were changes to the Civil Code allowing digitizing academic and educational literature published in Russia not later than ten years ago.
